10 Tips for Moving Beyond Poor Decisions

We've all made choices that we regret now and again, haven’t we? This is an inevitable part of daily life, and it’s really a huge aspect of how we learn and grow as individuals. Our mistakes, even the small ones, ultimately help us to understand more deeply who we truly are, and they assist us in carving out our personal boundaries and defining our values. Embracing these moments of reflection and growth can significantly lead us to a greater sense of self-awareness and resilience, shaping our unique journey towards personal fulfillment and offering richer life experiences.

It’s not always easy to clearly see that our mistakes and poor choices can actually be helpful to us, especially when we find ourselves right in the thick of it all, feeling overwhelmed and unsure. If we could consistently benefit equally from our good decisions as well as our poor decisions, life would certainly be easy peasy, wouldn’t it?

Unfortunately, our natural instincts often make it particularly challenging to extract valuable lessons from our poor choices. In the face of these challenges, we may become upset, distract ourselves to avoid the discomfort, withdraw into our shells, feel embarrassed about our actions, or even give up altogether, thinking it might be easier to pretend it never happened.

Lessons Hard Learned

Just tonight, my daughter received a rather tough lesson in making poor choices regarding online interactions. While playing her favorite online game, she unwittingly traded an item with someone that she genuinely believed wanted to trade her back something of equal value. Just prior to this ‘trade’, I had been gently hinting to her that she should remember to be cautious because not everyone online is truly who they claim to be. It was a stark reminder of the importance of trust and caution in the digital world.

I did not know that she was about to make this trade, but something deep inside me was telling me to give her a firm reminder to be cautious and vigilant when it comes to online games. Imagine how incredibly upset and frustrated she was with herself when she discovered that the other player had logged out almost immediately after she gave over her precious game item. It took her quite a while to calm down and gather her thoughts, and of course, she was mainly upset with herself for not listening to that little voice of caution.

As I consoled her in that moment of vulnerability, I took the opportunity to share some of my personal writing experiences that I felt might resonate with her.

There have been numerous occasions where I found myself fully immersed in writing an article, only to be nearly at the finish line and suddenly have the entire piece vanish into thin air, leaving me feeling bewildered. Additionally, there have been plenty of frustrating times when I was learning about coding for my website, only to discover that I had made a significant error that would require me to seek out someone more experienced to help me fix it.

Lo and behold, many times, I have been pleasantly surprised with the outcome once the mistake was corrected. I gently reminded my daughter that, in a similar way, she may be pleasantly surprised to uncover new and exciting elements about her favorite game that she might truly enjoy exploring.

Sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone you truly trust can significantly help you feel heard, understood, and supported, ultimately leading to a profound sense of relief and connection that nourishes your soul.
